Photos Seven: Color

This photo shows a few elements of color design. First, it has a limited palette. Although the palette is not limited to one color, it is limited to about half of the color wheel, which still creates a unique effect. Additionally, this photo shows that different colors have different brightnesses even when the saturation is the same. The red, orange, and yellow flowers all feel like they have approximately the same saturation, but the yellow ones are obviously the brightest.

This photo has a contrasting palette. I kind of find it hard to look at because of the evenness of the greens and pinks. There is no simple overall shape to either color, so a kind of unique, disorienting feeling is created.

For my final photo, I have two photos of the same side of a car, with different levels of black and teal. I wanted to look at how these different balances effected the quality of teal. It seems to me that the more black there is, the darker the teal appears in this case. This is an interesting phenomenon that I don't think I'm very good at using yet, but which hopefully I will continue to learn as I photograph more.

  1. Great photos Jeff! I really like your first photo, as it kind of has that succession of color from red to orange to yellow. I think that is really nice. The colors of the flowers definitely make anything else in the photo unimportant or inconsequential.

Your second photo is really pretty to me. I understand what you are saying about it being hard to look at because of the difference in colors, but I think that both colors are very beautiful. The pink is stunning and stands out so much.

Your third photo is really interesting. I like that you took two photos to compare, however I think I have to disagree with you. I have a hard time seeing a difference in the teal. Perhaps I am in a similar situation as you; I have a hard time with this concept of seeing the same color as darker or lighter depending on other colors it is set against.
